Under 14 Girls

Worcestershire v Shropshire

On Thursday the 22nd January Worcestershire girls U14s hosted Shropshire at a cold and frosty Littleton Football Club in a Midland Counties League fixture. The game started at a very quick pace
with players from both sides struggling to come to terms with the heavily sanded playing surface down the centre of the pitch and the sub zero conditions.

Worcestershire seemed to adapt a lot quicker than their opponents and gained instant success as a clever through ball from midfield caught the Shropshire defence square allowing Jade Grove to
use her pace and strength to slot passed the keeper. The Shropshire defence continued to
have problems throughout the rest of the first half as  quality balls and passes were played through
to the Worcestershire forwards into the space between the goalkeeper and the back four resulting in a number of excellent chances which unfortunately were not converted. The Worcestershire back four never really looked in any trouble during the first half and unlike their opponents were well in control being brilliantly led by Olivia Ashfield and Anna Nicod.

Shropshire started the second half much better after a couple of substitutions and started to compete seeing a lot more of the ball but it was Worcestershire who scored again when pressure on
the defence in the Shropshire penalty box resulted in an own goal. Worcestershire needed to reorganise as Shropshire started to create periods of pressure themselves.Players were switched around and substitutions made to improve the shape and structure of the team. This soon paid off when following a quick throw in on the left Worcestershire scored for a third time when Lily Eustace took the ball off her team mate and curled the ball over the goalkeeper into the goal from the edge of the penalty area.

Near the end of the game Shropshire managed to score a consolation goal to cap a much improved second half performance though Worcestershire proved too strong on the night winning 3-1.

The Worcestershire U14 girls now move to the top of the Midland Counties League with two games remaining against Staffordshire both home and away.

Shropshire v Worcestershire

On Wednesday the 19th November Worcestershire girls U14s travelled to
Thomas Telford School to play their first competitive league fixture of the
season against a strong Shropshire side.

Worcestershire were without a regular goalkeeper so it was left down to a number of outfield
players to step forward and volunteer. Thanks go to Jade Grove and Natasha
Jones who both performed well while taking their individual turn.

Worcestershire started off very brightly with some good quick passing movements and determined
pressing of the ball which unsettled Shropshire eventually paying off after 15
minutes when Lily Eustace scored to make it 1-0. The goal came from a fantastic
precise diagonal ball from Josie Steel who picked out her player from a wide position.
Worcestershire maintained the single goal advantage through the remaining
period until half time with the game being pretty evenly contested.

The second half of the game burst into life with Worcestershire getting off to a
great start as Jade Grove found space and chipped the Shropshire goalkeeper
from 20 yards to make it 2-0 .The County continued to play good football while
battling and challenging hard for every ball. Eventually Shropshire began to
put on some pressure and scored to make it a bit of a nervy end to the game, however
Worcestershire held out well with the defence making some great tackles and clearances
in order to preserve their advantage. Shortly before the end of the game the
margin could have been increased as Olivia Ashfield created a couple of great
chances for herself which narrowly missed the net.

Worcestershire v Lancashire

On a windy
but dry evening at Littleton Football Club Worcestershire U14’s played our
first competitive fixture of the season against Lancashire.

The game started at a fast pace with both sides competing for the ball in midfield
without either side able to put more than two or three passes together, therefore
being unable to create any pressure at either end of the pitch. Lancashire
moved the ball down the right hand side quite a lot in the opening period
trying to get their fast wide player into the game but Rebecca Compertz matched
the opposition for speed and strength and with the help of our other defenders
limited the visitors to a few corners and weak shots from distance.
Worcestershire broke forward ourselves and on one occasion I managed a shot
from midfield which appeared to be dipping in under the crossbar until their
goalkeeper pushed it up and over.

As the teams switched ends the pattern of play continued with both defences on top without
either team able to find that final ball to make clear chances. Lancashire made
a number or substitutions in groups until eventually they began to find spaces
and attack our goal. A special mention should go to Francis Stenson who pulled
off a string of fantastic saves to keep the scores level as the game went into
the final period. At times in the game I felt that we did not use the full
width of the pitch enough playing the ball too much through the middle of the
field and not giving or making an angle for each other to receive the ball.
This will improve by working together in training and playing more games.

Following more changes by both sides and well into the last 10 minutes Lancashire finally
broke the deadlock with a well taken free kick from the edge of the penalty
area and quickly followed up with two more goals to finish 0-3 winners.

My view is that there were positives to take from the game. The game was very close until
we conceded near the end and right the way through the match as a team we stood
up to the challenge with our tackling and commitment. There were also some very
good individual performances and as a team I think we will only improve.

Worcestershire v Shropshire

Worcestershire got their season off to a great start with a three nil victory against Shropshire. This was the U14s first outing as a team playing against a Shropshire side who had only played one fixture previously. Worcestershire were led by captain Abby Bevan and vice captain Kerstin Ballard.

As both teams were relatively new to playing as a team, the start saw both sides struggle to string together consecutive passes. However Worcestershire thanks to the midfield triangle of Lily Eustace, Abby Bevan and Kiera Douglas began to spray the ball across the pitch with great effect.

Although Worcestershire started brightly they could have been a goal down as Shropshire's lively forwards were dangerous on the counter attack. However, France Stenson making her debut in goal, raced of her line to prevent a goal scoring opportunity.

As the game developed the defense started to gain confidence in ball retention with Cerys Dolloway and Lucy Dovey linking up well with midfield to create attacking opportunities in transition.  When Shropshire got into advanced positions it was the tenacity of Tegan Trowbridge and Kerstin Ballard that kept Shropshire at bay.

The wide play of Megan Jones and Rebecca Gompertz was encouraging and helped create opportunities for Catherine Vose whose movement and link up play with midfield showed great promise for the season.

Goals came in the first half through two wonder strikes from Lily Eustace who dictated play from a central possession, demonstrating great vision and awareness with her range of passing as well as being confident enough to shoot from distance.

Going into half time Catherine Vose scored the games decisive goal with a great run and finish from an acute angle.

The second half saw all five Worcestershire players come off the bench to gain their first experience of representative schools football. Natalya Pulver partnered Leannah Rayment in central midfield and they both worked hard to move the ball to their team mates. The introduction of Ella Partington brought aerial dominance to the back line as Ella looked composed in possession of the ball and confident in defensive duties with Tegan Trowbridge who led by example throughout the game.

Amy Mulcock had a great influence from a forward position and demonstrated a great first touch and awareness, looking to create opportunities in the opponents final third.  Melissa Hinton was unfortunate not to score after great play down the wing by Megan Jones late in the second half.

Special mention goes to Frances Stenson who withstood late pressure from Shropshire as they pushed onto to snatch a goal from the game. Frances was very quick of her line and showed great awareness and composure on the ball throughout the game.

A positive start to the season in a game that showed great structure and fluidity in Worcestershire's play within the first half. The second half saw the game lose its structure and shape due to a raft of substitutions made by both sides, however a number of pupils who featured in the second half made a great impact.

Players Player goes to Lily Eustace with Managers Player going to Tegan Trowbridge.

Match Report: U14 Worcestershire v Staffordshire

Worcestershire suffered defeat against Staffordshire by three goals to one in a very cold evening fixture yesterday evening.

In conditions that made it difficult to play football Worcestershire started well and for a large portion of the first half were camped inside their opponents half. Only the post and some great last ditch defending prevented Abby Bevan and Olivia Mitcham from putting Worcestershire in front.

A goal came courtesy of a wonder strike from Chloe Peplow who showed good awareness to lob the keeper from thirty yards. Despite continued pressure Worcestershire could not add to the lead and as the game wore on Staffordshire worked themselves back into the game. The Staffordshire equaliser coming direct from a Worcestershire gk with another goal added close to half time shifting the momentum to Staffordshire.

The second half saw a number of changes by both sides as the game opened up with both teams chasing the all important next goal.

As Worcestershire started to get the ball out wide Zoe Clarke was able to get into more advanced positions and was unlucky not to get a couple of assists. The addition of Maisie Farr into central midfield led to higher tempo passing as Worcestershire pressed higher up the pitch searching for an equaliser. Although Worcestershire battled to the end they could not find the equaliser and late on Staffordshire gained a third goal to kill the game off.

The match was keenly contested in poor conditions and Worcestershire will travel to play Staffordshire again after the Easter break.

Very difficult to pick a player of the game however Olivia Mitcham, Zoe Clarke and Kerstin Ballard were stand out players with the award going to Kerstin Ballard who has only just returned to school after a bout of tonsillitis to put in a player of the game performance.

I am pleased to confirm the squad for the Worcestershire v Staffordshire fixture. After watching the Y8 girls play today against the Y7 Nunnery Wood High School boys team there have been a number of difficult decisions to make regarding team selection. To lose narrowly 4-3 shows that there is a great deal of potential for the Y8s to progress as Y9s for next season. All players selected will need to arrive in school uniform. Pupils will need to meet at Nunnery Wood High School for 6pm. The game will kick off at 7pm. As usual food will be provided after the game. If your daughter have been selected, please confirm that your daughter is fit and available to play after her weekend fixtures. If I have not had confirmation that your daughter can play by Sunday evening she will be replaced in the squad.

January 22nd 2013

On Sunday 3rd February a fixture has been organised for the Worcestershire U14 girls to play against Droitwich Spa  Girls FC U15 girls in preparation for our U14 Inter County Cup fixture against Lancashire. This will be ideal preparation for the girls against a strong club team. The fixture will take place at Nunnery Wood High School. Pupils will need to arrive at 12:00 ready for a 13:00 kick off. The fixture will take place on grass. Pupils will need to wear smart clothing or their school uniform (no trainers, jeans, t shirts etc). Food will be provided afterwards by our sponsor, Domino’s Pizza.  The new date for the Lancashire fixture is Tuesday 5th February. The game has been arranged in Skelmersdale with a 15:00 kick off. We will depart from Nunnery Wood High School at 11:00. By playing the fixture in Skelmersdale and bringing the kick off time forward, it will mean that we should return to Worcester by 21:00, allowing all of those involved to be able to function the next day, compared to the previous fixture which would have had us returning at 01:00! Pupils will need to wear smart clothing or their school uniform (no trainers, jeans, t shirts etc) The game will take place on 3g removing any concerns about the pitch condition affecting the game.  Please can you confirm your daughters availability for both fixtures by Sunday 27th January. Once I have had confirmation of pupils availability I will select a squad of fifteen pupils for both fixtures. The squad for both games will be confirmed via email on Monday 28th January.

January 6th 2013

Thank you for attending today's trial. I was impressed with the standard of football, but more importantly the work ethic and attitude displayed. It is always difficult trying to select a squad after seeing people play for a limited amount of time. As mentioned in previous emails the first fixture of the season will take place this Tuesday away to Lancashire County Schools in the English Schools FA National Inter County Cup.
Based on what me and Jenny Russell  (Stourport High School) have seen at the first and second trials. A squad of sixteen pupils have been selected to represent the Worcestershire County Schools FA U14 Girls this season. An additional eight pupils have been put down as reserves. The pupils who have been put as reserves are pupils that we feel have the potential to play for the county next season as Y9s but are not quite there yet as Y8s.
After February half term there will be another training session. This will take place on a Sunday morning or Monday evening at Nunnery Wood High School (time & date TBC). All players will need to attend this session including reserves. After this training session a squad will be selected for fixtures against Staffordshire County Schools and Warwickshire County Schools.

December 12th 2012

I am pleased to confirm details for the U14 Worcestershire County Schools FA trial. The trial will take place at Nunnery Wood High School on Wednesday 19th December 2012.

The trial will run from 3:30 – 6:00PM. Pupils will need to bring footwear suitable for both an Astroturf and a grass pitch. Pupils will need to wear shin pads and bring their own playing kit. Weather conditions will determine the playing surface used for the trial.

Only girls currently in school years 8 or 9 may trial for the Worcestershire County Schools FA representative side. The standard of play that pupils will experience if successful will be of a very high standard. The majority of players who have gone on to represent the U16 Worcestershire County Schools FA side play centre of excellence football.

Our current U16 captain Rebecca Lloyd represented the English Schools FA U15 team last season. Former players who have achieved great success include our 2010/11 team captain Hannah George who has represented Birmingham City Ladies in the Women’s Super League. Megan Walsh our goalkeeper from the 2010/11 season is a current England U17 international and first team goalkeeper at Aston Villa Ladies.

The format of the season for those selected to represent Worcestershire County Schools FA will see Worcestershire County Schools FA play away against Lancashire County Schools FA in the English Schools FA National Inter County Cup on Tuesday 8th January 2013. The game will take place in Blackpool with a team coach being provided for the fixture. In addition to the national cup, fixtures will be organised against Staffordshire County Schools FA and Warwickshire County Schools FA.

By playing for the county your daughter will have the chance to play to a very high standard and have the chance to progress through the Worcestershire County Schools FA performance pathway. As team manager, each year I am able to nominate pupils to trial for the U15 England Schools FA team. This year we have five girls trialling.
